Poll: Half Say Low-Carb Diets Not Worth Risks





Half of all Americans surveyed for the new "Down Survey" said that no amount of weight loss from low-carb diet would be worth the potential negative impact on health.


According to a national survey of 801 adults, the possible side effects of low carbohydrate diets - such as high cholesterol, constipation, kidney stones and an increased risk of some types of cancer - "tip the scales" against following such a diet for the entire 50 percent respondents.

The backlash is already affecting the grocery industry, with less than half as many low-carb products were introduced in 2004 than in 2003, and sales figures show that many of these products are withdrawn, deduction or weeks after the introduction. Some experts even project that two thirds of products introduced this year will be off the shelves until 2006.
